Crowdcube.com recently interviewed EFS Global Managing Director Mark Jones:
Could you tell us about EFS Global?
We are a UK-based logistics provider with worldwide reach and over 2,000 customers. From import and export to European road freight, customs clearance, refrigerated transport and more, we offer the cost-conscious SME a one-stop shop in logistics.
We work from seven key depots which cover the length and breadth of the UK – including Manchester, Liverpool, Bradford (Skipton and Keighley), Preston, Tamworth, Immingham, with our headquarters in Burnley.
Why did you decide to launch a crowdfunding campaign?
We had spent the previous six months meeting various private equity companies and didn’t really get the feeling that this was right for us, at this point in our evolution. When we discovered Crowdcube, we quickly realised this was the perfect route for raising finance for our business.
We have grown from a standing start to a £29 million turnover business and liked the idea of getting our staff, suppliers, customers and the general public involved in joining us, taking the next step and sharing in our success.
What’s the most important thing you’ve learned about being a business owner?
A happy team! As a business, the most important thing you can do is have happy and well-motivated employees. Add Crowdcube to this so they can become investors/shareholders and it’s a winning formula.
Happy, motivated employees will always go the extra mile if they feel appreciated. As you can imagine, logistics is a fast moving competitive working environment which at times can be very stressful. It’s imperative for EFS Global to maintain excellent customer service levels.
Your sector is relatively competitive, what does your business offer that’s unique?
Our business model is unique in that it targets SMEs who require excellent service levels at a fair price. We have built and are carrying on building a group of companies all with their local customer service team, with the local knowledge and an excellent understanding of their customers’ specific requirements.
What does the future hold for the business?
The future for EFS Global is really exciting. We have two acquisitions taking place in the next couple of months which will increase sales to around £37 million plus bolt on even more customers who we can introduce to our other service offerings from within the group. With the money raised from the equity sale via Crowdcube, we will have the funds to accelerate our growth.
